Description:
Ruger’s Vaquero revolver was designed in response to the shooting community’s call for a SAA-style revolver that was less expensive than an original SAA. The Vaquero was built on essentially the standard Blackhawk frame with fixed sights. As such, they were slightly larger than the Colt SAA they were designed to resemble. These revolvers, such as the one here, were built between 1993 and 2004. In 2005, Ruger introduced the New Vaquero, which uses its own, smaller frame, making it much closer to the SAA in size. This came at a price, however. The original Vaquero possessed a cylinder that was both wider and longer. This allowed it to fire .45 Colt rounds loaded to modern pressure levels, such as those made by Buffalo Bore. The New Vaquero, with its smaller and shorter cylinder, will only handle .45 Colt when loaded to standard pressures. In recent years, Ruger dropped the “New” from the marketing title, though the guns themselves are still marked "New Vaquero". Needless to say, this has caused confusion. Please note that the proper terminology for the two models is “Vaquero” and “New Vaquero”. The phrase “Old Model” is never used with the original Vaquero as it was introduced after the introduction of the transfer bar into other Ruger single-action revolvers, such as the Blackhawk. Since the transfer bar was the primary difference between the Old and New Models, and the Vaquero came equipped with one from the beginning, the term “Old Model” does not apply to it. This Vaquero revolver comes in a color case-hardened finish. It was made in 2001, and it features a 5.5” barrel, simulated ivory grips with Ruger medallions, fixed sights, and the famous SAA style hammer. It has rather light powder burns on the face of the cylinder, and the bore is in pristine shape. As is usually the situation for firearms with a color case-hardened finish, there is micro-pitting present on the cylinder frame. The hammer and trigger both exhibit light micro pitting, though some Flitz polishing compound would fix this. The grip frame, barrel and cylinder do not exhibit rust or pitting, though there is some minor wear of the bluing on the right side of the barrel. The Vaquero comes with its original factory box and manual.
