FLINTLOCK COAT/BELT Pistol Early 19th Century Self Defense Weapon Here we present an antique Smith Marked British Flintlock Coat/Belt Pistol, made circa the early-19th Century in London, England. This pistol has a fairly large frame and a heavy barrel. Then as now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. According to some estimates, European rifles were made at a ratio of 250:1 over pistols, making these rare and highly coveted. This pistol features a large .59 caliber “manstopping” bore that would have been slipped into a gentleman’s coat pocket on neatly tucked into his belt. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels while strolling in the busy streets of London or Paris in the early 1800s. The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is patinated and smooth. The stock is solid with the exception of the repaired sliver on the right side of the forestock. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4-3/4 inches.
