Description:
RARE CALIBER SAVAGE 1899A 22" SHORT RIFLE IN .38-55, #116XXX, MADE 1911. The standard caliber for these was .303 Savage. The .38-55 is scarce and rarely encountered- doubly so as this is a less common 1899A Short Rifle. The standard 26" 1899 had a crescent butt plate while the Short Rifle had a shotgun butt plate. This example also has the correct early patent dates on the top of the barrel ending in 1899. This changed after 1911 to include the 1909 patent date. Also, this rifle has the desirable "perch belly stock" which was standard from about 1908-09 until 1917. All major parts serial numbers match- receiver, forend, butt stock and hard rubber Savage embossed butt plate. The barrel shows fine deep barrel blue with only light ageing and exc. markings. It is fitted with a large full buckhorn rear sight with Lyman bead front sight. It is also fitted with a Marbles tang sight in the correct holes that is made for this rifle. The receiver shows some very thin aged blue toward the rear sections of the sides, but is mostly gray with some good blue in the most protected areas. Stock and forend are solid and do not appear to have any of the usual cracks behind the upper tang.  There is one curious 1/2" round inlay in the top of the stock about 1 1/2" from the top of the butt plate that is so well done and tight fitting that without looking for it one might not notice it. Whether this was to cover a small compass that was removed or a brass/silver identification plate of some kind is unknowable and either way minor. Tight action, brass rotor magazine spring is fine and the bore is fine with good rifling all the way through and no pitting. A really scarce 112 year old Savage.
