Here we have an honest and true Colt Lightning rifle chambered in .32-20 caliber. The medium-frame Colt Lightning Magazine Rifle was manufactured between 1884 and 1904. It was the first slide-action rifle offered by Colt. Colt records indicate 89,777 were produced, in .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40 as a companion arm to the Colt Single Action Army revolver. This particular example is of the medium frame variety and was made in 1885. Since it has no breech cover and only 1883 Patent dates it is a first version of the standard rifle. The 26 inch barrel has a bright bore and good rifling. The finish has worn to a warm grey patina over the years and there are scatterd handling and storage marks and some high edge wear. At some point some light brightening has been done on the left side of the receiver to enhance the rampant Colt logo. The oiled walnut stock and forend have just a few character marks earned over the years....no chips or cracks. This beautiful Colt rifle would make a great addition to an existing collection or a strong start to a new collection.
