At the end of the First World War, the British military decided that the .455 caliber gun and cartridge was too large for modern military use, and after numerous tests and extensive trials, that a pistol in .38 caliber firing a 200-grain bullet would be just as effective as the .455 for stopping an enemy. Webley & Scott immediately tendered the .38/200 caliber Webley Mk IV revolver, which was based on their .38 caliber Webley Mk III pistol, designed for the police and civilian markets. To the surprise of Webley, the British government took the design to the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock and had them basically develop the same handgun and it was adopted by the British military. Webley & Scott sued the British Government and were denied, though the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors eventually awarded Webley & Scott £1250 for their work. RSAF Enfield proved unable to manufacture enough No. 2 revolvers to meet the military's wartime demands, and as a result Webley's Mk IV was also widely used within the British Army in World War II. This example bears the mark “War Finish”, which was intended to alert those seeing it to the fact that they could expect a superior standard of finish on the Webley product. The overall condition is near fine. Original finish. The action is excellent with one exception, that when the hammer is at rest the cylinder does not lock up. The cylinder does index and lock up properly when the trigger is pulled and when the hammer is cocked. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips are in great shape. The right grip is just a tad shy to the grip frame. Numbers match. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 5 inches. Caliber: .38-200 (.38 S&W) Overall condition as seen in photos.
