Description:
***   SOLD   ***   Handsome Woodward 12 bore hammergun made on the famed Woodward “Automatic” action with snap action underlever opener. Woodward no. 3563 was made circa 1874 – 79 and has recently been refurbished.  The lockplates are inscribed “J.Woodward & Sons”. It has highly figured Damascus barrels with extractors which allow for a trim action body. The barrels are complimented by a highly figured French walnut stock and splinter forearm. The action body has some residual case coloring and is profusely engraved although the engraving shows some wear. Weighs 6lb 8oz. Cased in a period leather case with accessories and original maker’s label. Handle will need to be replaced.  ***   The 28” highly figured Damascus barrels are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib and have extractors. Blackpowder proof. The right barrel is bored 0.735 with a constriction of 0.002 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029. The left barrel is bored 0.739 and has a constriction of 0.031 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.026. Typical of guns of the blackpowder era there is some pitting in the bores but there is sufficient wall thickness that would allow the use of low pressure ammunition such as that offered by RST Shotshells.   ***   The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut. The checkering is crisp and the finish is in good condition. Stock dimensions are 14-3/4” including a 1-inch leather covered recoil pad by 1-1/2” by 2-3/8”. Neutral cast. There are, of course, a few minor handling marks for normal usage and there is a historic repair of a knot on the left side of the stock.   ***   What stories this lightweight Woodward hammergun could tell. Great handling and recently refurbished it is in good mechanical condition. Looking for a new owner to carry it afield and add a new chapter to its interesting life. ***   Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense ***   Come and see this great double and other fine shotguns at the MacNab booth at the Southern Side-by-Side Championship & Exhibition April 27th – April 30th, 2023 at Deep River Sporting Clays in Sanford, NC.   ***   Be Sure to Enter the MacNab / John Dickson & Son Scottish Round Action Event.
