Description:
COMMERCIAL Tower ENFIELD Pattern 1861 MUSKETOON Antique American CIVIL WAR

1861 Dated Military Carbine

Here we present an antique British Commercial Proofed Tower Enfield Pattern 1861 Musketoon made circa 1861 in Birmingham, England. In the British Army, the Pattern 1861 was issued to artillery units, who required a weapon for personal defense, and which could be more easily wielded from horseback. They were also imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War and issued to artillery and cavalry units. However, the longer Pattern 1853 was more suitable for infantry units which fought in line formation of several ranks deep, in order to minimize the risk that the men in the rear ranks would accidentally shoot the men in the front ranks in the back of the head.

Like the earlier Pattern 1856 and Pattern 1860 Rifles, the Pattern 1861 Rifle was iron mounted, with a blued barrel and bands and a color case hardened lock and furniture. The rifles were equipped with a lug that accepted the Pattern 1856 semi-yataghan bladed saber bayonet. While the earlier pattern rifles had seen substantial production from the various Birmingham contractors, the Pattern 1861 was primarily produced at the Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF) at Enfield Lock with limited contractor production. The Pattern 1861 Rifle was the last of the percussion, muzzleloading British military rifles. It was the most advanced variation to be produced and many of the Pattern 1861s never saw field service as they were the latest production arms and were held for service at the Tower. These rifles formed the core of the rifle supply for the Snider alteration program that began during the latter part of the 1860s.

It was much liked for its ease of handling and being designed for use with Minié ball bullets they could have a lethal range of up to 500 yards. This weapon is often referred to as a musketoon but due to it having a rifled barrel is more accurately known as a carbine. The Pattern 1861 Enfield musketoon was a short-barrel version of the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifled musket, having a faster rifling twist rate along with more rifling grooves which made it as accurate as the rifle at shorter ranges. The much shorter barrel would otherwise reduce the accuracy at longer ranges. The shorter rifle was, naturally, easier to carry and reload.

The barrel is secured by two screw fastened bands. The flat, flush-mounted lock plate is stamped with the British Crown behind the hammer and “1861/TOWER” in front of it. The top of the barrel is stamped with three British export proof and view marks on either side of two “25” gauge marks. These are the correct view, proof, and gauge markings for rifles exported from Great Britain to the United States during the Civil War. This rifle has no British military “Broad Arrow” or other property marks.

The overall condition is very good. Nicely refinished in blue with care for the markings. Strong action. The barrel has been smoothbored to .60 caliber. This example sports a solid stock with a small chip at the toe. “1861/TOWER” dated lock. Legible markings.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.
