Description:
SCARCE CIVIL WAR HARPERS FERRY U.S. MODEL 1855 PERCUSSION RIFLE DATED 1859. All original and with matching dates on barrel and lock. Two band rifle with 33” round rifled .58 cal. barrel with saber bayonet lug mounted on right side at the muzzle and proofed “V/P/EAGLE HEAD” and date stamped 1859 at the breech. Original front and rear sights. It is additionally Regimentally rack numbered “B/22” forward of the date stamp. Maynard Tape Primer lock with Federal Eagle on primer door and stamped “U.S./HARPERS FERRY” and dated 1859. Butt plate tang stamped “U.S.”. Stock with a faint but visible Ordnance inspector’s cartouche a half inch below the rear lock retaining screw head on the side panel. Fine overall with excellent medium grey metal patina and extra nice wood with sharp edges about the lock and side panel. Excellent working order including the Maynard Tape Primer mechanism which has an original tape in it. Excellent bore with well defined rifling. Only 7300 produced and approximately half destroyed in the warehouse fire during Jackson’s attack in April 1861. Also the remainder nearly all saw Confederate service during the war and thus had a low survival rate. Extra nice and very hard to find.
