Originally designed by John Browning in 1878, Winchester bought the design in 1883 to become the Winchester Model 1885. Produced between 1885 and 1920, two primary designs were created, the High Wall and Low Wall. The Low Wall which showed an exposed hammer, fired less powerful cartridges, and the so-called High Wall for stronger cartridges whose steel frame covered most of the firing hammer when viewed from the side; but both were officially marketed by Winchester as the Single Shot Rifle. Browning revived the design in 1995, producing them until 1999. Winchester now reintroduced this iconic rifle in 2005 and has been producing them since.
