Offered here is a nice-looking Ames Model 1850 Foot Officer sword and scabbard. The sword is in very fine condition with original sharkskin wrap and wire on the hilt, and the Ames maker mark etched on the blade The blade is tight and retains its original leather washer and has a higher quality etching than that commonly found on the foot officer swords, in this case covering almost 3/4 of the blade. The leather scabbard is an origninal Ames, so marked on the reverse upper mount. The scabbard was apparently broken and missing the lower drag. Someone did a previous repair, splicing some additional leather at the bottom and adding a modern but correct style reproduction drag. The leather above the drag remains weak and is reinforced with electrical tape to be able to display. There are restorers who can make it look good as new if buyer wishes to do that.
