Description:
Offered here is a very nice used example of the Model 1850 Foot Officer Sword made by Christopher Roby of West Chelmsford, Mass.  This style sword was typically carried by officers with the rank of captain and lieutenant, who would have performed their duties on foot as they led the men of the companies they commanded.  As that meant they would be marching with their men, scabbards were typically made of leather to reduce the weight,  As such, these scabbards often show wear and damage from hard marching, use, and time.  This sword and scabbard remain in remarkably attractive condition despite exhibiting evidence of long use. The sharkskin grip shows considerable smooth wear, in one spot down to the wood, but retains the full wire wrap.  The scabbard is remarkably strong and smooth except for a break right above the drag, now repaired with black tape to hold the 2 pieces together.  (There are sword restorers who can repair this if the buyer wishes.) The scabbard drag shows evidence of extensive wear, as the bottom of the drag in entirely worn away so as to create a hole in the bottom of the scabbard.  This damage to the scabbard was likely compounded by the fact that this sword has a longer 31 3/4 inch blade as opposed to the more common and shorter 30 1/2 inch blade usually found on foot officer swords. The scabbard also has 2 saber straps with brass snaps attached to it.  This sword saw a lot of use, and its owner did a lot of marching.  It is nice to hold an artifact that you know actually saw extensive use during the Civil War.  If only this sword could talk to tell us about its owner and where it has been!  The blade is a mixture of bright and gray, retaining beautiful deep etching but some light pitting in the 6 inches towards the tip of the blade.  The blade washer is worn away, but the blade remains tight to the hilt.  The etching on Roby swords is remarkable in that besides being deep, ornate, and attractive, it appears that Roby swords are individually etched by the artist, as opposed to the use of templates to create the design, as was done by many other manufacturers.  As a result, while Roby swords often display common etched elements such as thistle, flowers, vines and grape clusters, they are typically unique from each other.  Besides the typical elements of a large "U.S." and Federal eagle, Roby swords may have a patriotic slogan etched somewhere on the blade.  This one has "UNION" amd "LIBERTY" on a ribbon running through a floral spray on the revers side.  Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.  Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states.  Shipping cost $45.00.
