Description:
ONE OF THE VERY LAST OF THE GREAT .45-70 TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD RIFLES, MODEL 1888 "ROD BAYONET" MODEL #560XXX, MADE IN THE FINAL PRODUCTION YEAR OF 1893. This example looks like it was simply stored away for the last hundred years or so. The metal is s soft aged blue turning plum. All markings are fine. A few storage dings on the left high edge of the breech block and on the right forward portion of the rod bayonet housing- all minor. Correct 1884 dated breech block and Springfield markings on the lock plate. Has a light 1893 dated cartouche in the stock along with the correct circle P cartouche. Correct Buffington rear sight. Tight action, generally excellent bore with a few small spots of very light roughness toward the middle of the bore. Wood is fine with one hairline crack on the right side by the upper barrel band that appears solid. 1893 was the final year of production with serial numbers running up to about 568000. Many of these saw extensive service in the Spanish American War in Cuba and in the Philippines. Considered the finest shooting of all the Trapdoor Models.
