Description:
Antique SWISS SCHMIDT-RUBIN M1889 STRAIGHT PULL Bolt Action 7.5x53mm Rifle

Sporter, 12 Round Capacity Detachable Box Magazine
Here we present an antique Swiss Schmidt-Rubin Model 1889 Straight Pull Bolt Action Military Rifle, made in 1893 in Bern, Switzerland. To accelerate the sluggish production of the Vetterli rifles, the federal authorities built a new arms factory in Bern, the Eidgenössische Waffenfabrik (W+F), in 1875. That factory produced the 1878 and 1881 variant of the Vetterli rifle prior to producing this Schmidt-Rubin rifle. This rifle was officially adopted on June 26, 1889 with production ceasing on April 29, 1897 after 211,890 rifles had been delivered.

The Model 1889 was the first in the series of Schmidt–Rubin rifles that served Switzerland from 1889 through 1953. The rifle takes its name from the designer of its action, Colonel Rudolf Schmidt, and the designer of its ammunition, Colonel Eduard Rubin. Production of the rifle began in 1891. The straight-pull bolt action allows the user to pull the bolt straight back to unlock the action, cock the striker, extract, and eject the spent cartridge in one motion, and then push the bolt forward to chamber a round and lock the action. This is as opposed to a traditional bolt action, wherein the user must lift the bolt handle to unlock the action before pulling the bolt back. The rifle is roughly musket length with a free-floating barrel, 12-round magazine and wood stock that extends almost to the tip of the barrel. The Schmidt–Rubin 1889 was an advanced weapon for its time. The Schmidt–Rubin 1889 was one of the first rifles to use copper-jacketed ammunition as its standard ammunition. The GP90 7.5×53.5mm round designed by Col. Rubin in 1882 was revolutionary in that most of the bullets used in Europe at the time were around .45 caliber, as opposed to the .308 caliber of the Schmidt–Rubin ammunition. The round was "paper patched", meaning that the bullet was surrounded by a piece of paper, much like the cotton patches placed around a musket ball. Paper patching the round was supposed to aid in the lubrication of the bullet. The Model 1889 was eventually replaced by the Model 1896. This Swiss military rifle had a 12 round detachable box magazine of 7.5mm Centerfire cartridges, giving it significant firepower.

The overall condition is very good. Professionally sporterized and imported circa the 1960s prior to import mark regulations. The barrel has been trimmed and recrowned, the stock has been cut shorter, and the rear sight ground down to a maximum of 500 meters. Original finish. The action is excellent. All numbers match. The bore is fantastic, shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock is solid.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.

Caliber: 7.5x53mm Swiss

Overall condition as seen in photos.
