Description:
The Model 1878 was produced beginning in 1878 and ran until production stopped in 1907. A total of 51,210 were produced during this period including 4600 for the US Ordnance Department.
The item for sale is a Colt Model 1878 Frontier Double Action Revolver. It is chambered for the 44-40 cartridge and manufactured in 1890. Originally blue with a 4 3/4" barrel.only traces of the blue remain. "Frontier Six Shooter" is roll stamped on the barrel. The original grips are in nice condition, an excellent fit and showing wear typical for the blue loss. The front sight has been filed as shown in the photos. Mechanically the gun is excellent having been serviced by a noted Colt authority in recent years (copy of service bill included). The bore has roughness but quite shootable as shown in the patterned target provided. This was 10 shots at 15 yards with black powder cartridges. Included is a very nice period double loop holster with a Chicago hallmark.
