Description:
The Winchester 1873 Musket came standard with a 30" barrel and 27" tubular magazine. The front sight was also designed as a bayonet stud to accept the angular socket bayonet. Winchester tried to secure military contracts for this design but, it was felt that the .44-40 cartridge was not powerful enough and unsuitable for military use. Winchester found a market for the rifle elsewhere and most of the 36,000 made went to South American countries. A number of muskets were imported back to the U.S. in the 1950s and 60s. The 1873 Musket is quite scarce in this country. This one dates to 1891. .44-40 Winchester
