HIGH CONDITION, RARE .38/44 OUTDOORSMAN TARGET POST WAR TRANSITION MODEL (!), #S71XXX, MADE 1947-48. Only about 2300 of these were made between 1946-1949 and found in the serial range of S62940-S75000. Built on the big "N" frame, this was one of S&Ws premier offerings. This example with 6 1/2" barrel has all matching numbers on the frame, barrel and cylinder. It retains nearly all the blue with only a touch of wear at the muzzle and a light cylinder line. Nice case colors on the hammer and trigger sides. The grips with deep dish S&W medallions fit about perfectly, but show no number inside and have light edge wear. Tight action, perfect bright bore. Many of these have had their chambers bored out from .38 Special to .357 Magnum, this one is unaltered .38 Special. Incredibly smooth action and light target trigger which was typical of the early Post-World War period. A great 75 year old big frame target S&W. These don't come up for sale often.
