Description:
The Wildey pistol was the world’s first gas-operated double-action semi-automatic pistol. It is most famous for its appearance in the film Death Wish 3 staring Charles Bronson. The pistol used in the film was Bronson’s personal pistol, a 10”-barrelled version in brushed stainless finish and chambered for the .475 Wildey Magnum. The Wildey utilizes a unique short-stroke gas operation which allows the pistol to be adapted to fit a wide range of magnum cartridges from the 9mm Winchester Magnum to the .475 Wildey Magnum. Wildey J. Moore, the designer, described his patented gas system as an “air-hydraulic piston powered by the firing gases through six small holes in the barrel. This pistol forces the slide rearward, initiating the cycling of the pistol”. One significant advantage of the system is that the gas-regulator valve can be adjusted to use different loads whether they are heavy or light in nature. The barrel of the Wildey is fixed, i.e., it does not move backwards or tilt upwards during operation as the barrel on a 1911 would. The bolt of the Wildey has 3 locking lugs for strength and is a rotating type. The rear of the slide is designed to resemble that of a 1911, as is the grip frame. Unlike most modern pistols, the Wildey uses a heel-mounted magazine release lever similar in nature to the FN Model 1910 or Walther P38 pistol. The example shown here is the Survivor model with a brushed stainless finish and an 8-inch long barrel. As with any Wildey pistol, the barrel sports a vent rib. The pistol is in superb shape and has likely not been fired all that much. There is a light scratch in the right-hand grip panel. There bore is superb shape. Looking down the bore the six gas ports are clearly visible. The rear sight appears to have the original matte black finish worn or flaked off. There are some light scratches in the finish on the top of the barrel rib and one or two on the barrel itself. The pistol comes with the original box, manual, and one magazine. Serial number is 4402. The box is a bit worn. The foam packing inside is in the process of disintegrating with particles inevitably covering the gun if it is placed inside. There are 343 rounds of ammunition that go with this pistol. This is important because, in this day and age, the .475 Wildey Magnum is generally made to order by a select few ammunition manufacturer’s who specialize in producing hard-to-find ammunition. Two of the boxes were made by Kaswer Custom, Inc. Both are partials. One has 45 rounds and 5 empty cases. The other suffered damage to the Styrofoam packing inside and only holds 48 of the original 50 rounds. The other two are simply gone. These 93 rounds of ammunition are loaded with 300gr jacketed flat point. There are five full 50-round boxes of ammo manufactured by Wildey Magnum Ammunition. These are loaded with 300gr JHP. The ammunition will have to be shipped separately from the pistol in accordance with federal law. The buyer pays full shipping.
