Description:
This is a full, 20 original rounds, box of .45-70 ammunition manufactured by Winchester for the U.S. Government for “Standard Target Use" with the very scarce smokeless powder load and 500 grain bullets. Identified on p93 of Giles & Shuey's One Hundred Years of Winchester Cartridge Boxes, 1856-1956 these Smokeless boxes are seldom encountered and were only manufactured from 1895-98 with a rarity of R4 on a scale of 1-5. The two piece buff box is solid with plain, intact labels showing light flaking calling out the Government contract and Winchester Repeating Arms Company with overall mild age soiling. The cartridges are in near excellent condition lightly darkened with age. A rare box for the advanced collector.
