Description:
This is the Model 1880 US Army Intrenching tool issued during the Indian War period which also saw the similarly designed Model 1880 Hunting Knife. The flat blade measures 8" long, with a width of 3 1/2", and a rounded tip. The steel blade is armory bright, original patina with some tiny spots of carbon staining. The throat of the cross guard nearest the handle has a small dime size area of surface pitting but is otherwise excellent. The 17 groove oak handle has a crisp “US" stamp at the top is excellent with a small impact mark on the top side of the handle but otherwise as issued with tiny chips of wood missing below the stamp. The original scabbard is excellent and has embossed “US" at the throat, and is fully intact with loop and ring showing some storage scratches and blemishes on the leather surface with intact stitching. An excellent example of this Indian Wars era tool that would be hard to improve upon.
