Cattleman with the same grip. Both are made by Uberti and are fairly close reproductions of the Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver, also known as the Peacemaker. This one is chambered for the legendary .44-40 Winchester. This is the cartridge most often associated with the Peacemaker, having been labeled as the “Cartridge that Won the West” with the Peacemaker and the Winchester Model 1873 lever-action carbine which chambered it being referred to as the “Pistol…” and “Rifle…” that “Won the West” respectively. In the Colt, the .44-40 was the second most common cartridge after Colt’s own .45 Colt. In total, between the standard, Bisley, and Flat-Top Target versions of the First-Generation Peacemaker (1873-1940), up to 158,884 were chambered for the .45 Colt compared to 71,392 for the .44-40 Winchester, 50,250 for the .38-40 Winchester, 43,284 for the .32-20 Winchester, and 19,676 for the .41 Long Colt. One simple reason for the .44-40s popularity back in the Old West was its stopping power. It was well suited as a self-defense round and was even considered suitable for hunting dear at that time (it is not suitable by today’s standards). Moving back to the Regulator, this example has an unusual 4” barrel. There are three lengths of barrel that the SAA/Peacemaker and its copies are known for, each with a popular nickname. The first length, the 7.5” barrel, is generally referred to as the Cavalry Model, named for the first model of SAA which was used by the U.S. Cavalry. The second is the 5.5” barrel which is generally known as the Artillery Model, again named for its use by a branch of the U.S. Army, in this case the artillery branch. The third is the 4.75” barrel, known as the “Quickdraw” for its ability to be quickly drawn from its holster. Colt did not officially produce a specific model with this barrel length for the military, and in general, those SAAs found with this barrel length are the Sheriff’s or Storekeeper’s Model (mfg. 1882-1898). This was a version of the SAA was built with a very short barrel, sometimes as short as 2.5 inches. None were fitted with an ejector rod. The most common barrel length for this model, however, was 4.0 inches. As the Regulator’s barrel is 4.0 inches in length, it is most likely based on the Storekeeper’s Model with the added benefit of an ejector rod. The example is used but in fairly good shape. It features a blued steel, birds head grip frame, a beautiful case-hardened finish on the cylinder frame and hammer, and a blued barrel and cylinder. The screws, pins, ejector rod and ejector rod housing are also blued. The wood grips are checkered. The bird’s head grip is based on the style of grip used on the Colt Model 1877 Double Action Revolver, although the two are not identical. The grip style is designed to be short but comfortable to shoot with and is well suited for the quick draw. There is some minor rust on the loading gate. The bluing is in superb shape with one small spot of finish wear on the left-hand side of the barrel. The bore is in excellent shape with some minor fouling. The Regulator comes with two 50-round boxes of 3D Blue 44-40 Winchester 200 gr LFN. These will have to be shipped separately from the pistol in accordance with federal law. Buyer pays full shipping.
