Description:
General Specs: Merkel 147EL, Year 1994, 20 Gauge, 5lb 15oz, IC/M, LOP 14 5/16", DAH 2 3/8", DAC 1 7/16"
Serial Number: 464720

Merkel shotguns made in Suhl Germany demonstrate legendary German engineering, with strength and function always foremost in the design.  The earlier Model 147 EL is a graceful, lightweight game gun utilizing 6 separate locking systems; sideclips to keep the barrels from shifting laterally on the standing breech, the Greener Crossbolt top fastener, the rib extension, the barrel lug through the bottom of the frame, and the traditional double underlug fasteners to give incredible strength and durability to this handsome double gun.  This 147 EL 20ga., sn464720 built in 1994 by Merkel with Luxus quality European walnut stock, hand engraved and signed by Master Engraver Ralph Weiss, deep chiseled game scenes, and special attention to the smallest details is in outstanding original condition.  The barrels retain 100% of their original blue.  The single selective trigger, ejectors and mechanics of this gun are in excellent working order.  The barrels are tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face.  This gun comes with the factory hard case and all paperwork and accessories.  These are hand engraved shotguns in the upper end of the Merkel line.  Just look at the beautiful walnut stock on this gun with full marble-cake figure and dark smoky grain, all laid out on perfect axis with the wrist!  Awesome!  The MSRP for the 147EL was $8880 and that does not include the extra cost of the single selective trigger or hard case, so retail was well over $9000.  You will be hard pressed to find another Merkel 147 EL with wood as nice as this gun. The earlier guns did not have 3” chambers. The newer Merkel 147 series are not as well made as this gun, and they no longer have the sideclips on the receiver as these were expensive features to fit the barrels to.  Even the engraving on the newer Merkel 147 EL guns lacks the detail and coverage that you see in this early gun, and they are machine engraved and hand chased, NOT hand engraved like this 29 year-old gun.  This one can be had at a fraction of the new retail cost.  With its 27" IC/M fixed chokes, she weighs a scant 5 pounds 15 ounces and balances gracefully 1/4” ahead of the hinge pin.  This is a dynamic handling shotgun for your upland hunts or sporting clays.  Priced to sell and destined to give you enjoyment for generations, it would be hard to find a better modern-day double gun value.  See the tables below for the specifications.
