SOUTHERN Hunting/Homestead Long Rifle
Here we present an antique Southern Style Full Stock American Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. This is an example of what early Americans would have carried on the southeastern mountain regions and frontier in western Virginia, North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and across Kentucky. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .42 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. This one has iron hardware rather than any brass and lacks a butt plate, has a long barrel tang, no patchbox, and a rectangular trigger guard which is typical of the southern long rifle.
The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The set trigger must be engaged for the hammer to hold the cock notches. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The stock is solid. The barrel tang has been repaired or replaced at some point and remains strong.
