Description:
SPECIAL ORDER 1894 .32-40 TAKEDOWN RIFLE, WITH ROUND BARREL AND HALF MAGAZINE, #304XXX, MADE 1906. Interestingly, this one has the barrel stamping "NICKEL STEEL" which would have been specially fitted to this rifle as during this time period only smokeless calibers (.25-35, .30 WCF or .32 WS) were fitted with nickel steel barrels and so marked. I called the Cody Museum and received a call-in sheet stating that this rifle was listed as a .32-40, round barrel, half magazine, takedown and received in the warehouse in 1906. No mention was made of the nickel steel barrel. the .32-40 was the least produced caliber in the 1894. Very fine condition overall with bright blue on the receiver sides and bolt that show light thinning only. Still some case color on the lever sides and on the hammer back with deep blue on the loading gate. Excellent screws, and fine, even blue on the barrel and short magazine tube. Tight takedown. Barrel is fitted with a factory buckhorn rear sight with small Winchester blade front sight. The upper tang is correctly fitted with a Lyman folding tang sight with disc and NO extra holes hiding underneath! The stock and forend are excellent showing only very light handling. The stock and forend cap are fitted with period correct sling-eye studs for hook-style swivels used at the time. Still some good blue on the forend tip. Tight action, strong hammer spring with strong safety half cock in the hammer. Minty, bright bore! A most handsome  special order and rare caliber takedown 117 year old Winchester.
