Description:
Here is a very rare and seldom-seen C. Langbein fighting knife manufactured during WWII straight "out of the woodwork" where it has been in storage for the last 30 to 40 years!  This unique and flat-out cool knife has never on the collector's market previously, and was brought to us by an extended family member of the U.S. Soldier that carried it.  Unfortunately the previous owner did not care enough to learn who exactly in their extended family carried it, nor did they know where they fought or with what unit, only that they were in WW2. These Landbein-made knives were hand-made in very low numbers and are not seen very often. Most knives are stamped LANGBEIN / NEW YORK on both sides with a less common marking being C. LANGBEIN / NEW YORK stamped on both sides. Some knives were personalized with the name of the soldier by the maker with some also having a serial number and/or branch of service. Langbein was a professional toolmaker who specialized in surgical stainless steel instruments before WWII.  At the start of the WW2, he began making fighting knives to supply U.S. troops in a limited capacity. One of the most interesting things about the Langbein knife is that the blade and grip are made of a single piece of surgical stainless tool steel and it has lot of heft, particularly in the handle.  They were finely machined from a single block of this steel, with no pins, screws, or joints of any type that create weak points.  The knife has an overall length of 12” with a 7” double-sided blade with a needle-like spear-shaped tip.  The handle was machined with a provision for a wrist lanyard, and the knife features a double cross guard. This knife can be seen in the book "U.S Military Knives" by M.H. Cole, the "bible" for U.S. fighting knife collectors. This knife does show a fair share of handling marks and wear but is still very handsome and shows a lot of character. The blade has been re-sharpened at least a few times at various points in it's life, and the tip shows light very shallow pitting most likely caused by combat use but has not been "nipped". The factory original leather sheath is still present and shows wear that is consistent with the knife. The leather is starting to crack but the button snap still functions. The bottom of the sheath has been wrapped in a "weather-proof" tape of some sort a very long time ago (likely during WW2) and shows consistent wear in line with the rest of the sheath.  Looking at this cool and rare fighting knife there is NO doubt that it was carried in combat whether that was in the Pacific Islands fighting the Japanese or in the ETO fighting Nazi Germany to their surrender.  Here is a very rare opportunity to add a very sought-after piece of WWII / fighting knife history to your collection!
