Description:
Beautiful 1820's-1830's Massachusetts Militia Cap Plate. Plates like these were commonly used on the tall leather militia caps and shakos used during that time frame. This one is the style pictured in Figure 638 of "American Military Headgear Insignia" by J. Duncan Campbell and Michael J. O'Donnell, with the exception this one is the less common (and better looking, I think) gilt on brass version as opposed to silvered tin or copper. It measures about 3 1/2" by 4 1/2" and retains almost all of its original gilt. On the back it has the original plume holder and one of the two wire attaching loops. Please take a look at all the photos, as they provide the best description. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return postage.
