Description:
No-Dash 1962 S&W Model 41 Factory 5” Field and later frame. From S&W Forums: Smith & Wesson produced the early 5" barrels by cutting 7-3/8 barrels. Rather than scrapping a good barrel that was botched from mounting the front sight, they cut the barrel to 5", remounted the sight, and sold it as an accessory. Early 5" barrels were virtually all produced by Smith & Wesson this way.
As it happened, the front sights on the Model 41 early barrels were added after the barrel was completed, they are place into a slot, and I think were silver soldered in place. It was the operation of putting in the front sights that caused damage to the barrels and why they had them to shorten. On all early short barrels if you look close to the ramp holding the front blade you will see that the top rib checkering goes up long the sight as it was there before the sight was installed. It is possible that in later years because of demand that they made some 5-inch barrels from scratch. But the early ones according to the production control manager were all made from 7 3/8-inch barrels.
