The C Grade Fox is one of the most handsome of the A.H. Fox graded guns, with its finely cut English scroll, game scene engraving, nicely engraved trigger guard, and European walnut stocks figured well on both sides.  There are many guns offered for sale so which one to buy?  A shotgunner should want to know stock dimensions, choke constrictions, minimum wall thicknesses, weight, balance point, trigger pulls…in addition to what the gun looks like in the pics.  In fact, most of the photos of guns for sale show no real details of the gun.  Don’t you want to know what you are buying?   Most offered for sale at low prices have a reason for being “cheap”, ie. cracked or repaired stocks, thin barrels, bad stock dimensions, malfunctioning mechanics, pitted metal, loose ribs, barrels loose on face…the list goes on.  Making wise decisions requires adequate information.  This fine A.H. Fox C Grade, sn14209 shipped in 1910, is an exceptional example of a Philly A.H. Fox.  The barrels retain 98% factory blue, action 85% case color, ALL FACTORY ORIGINAL WITH NO RESTORATIONS.  The wood and trigger guard have been restored.  The buttstock is nicely figured with a VFI hand-rubbed oil finish, excellent checkering, and good stock dimensions.  The 32” #1 weight Krupp Steel barrels have excellent bores, factory F/F chokes, minimum barrel wall thickness .037”, reinforced forend loop, tight ribs, and barrels that fit tight to the hinge and breech face with the top lever to the right of center.  PRESENTLY IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND 2 ½” 12GA. SHELLS TO PURCHASE.  VFI GUNSMITHS HAVE CAREFULLY MEASURED THE BARREL WALL THICKNESS AHEAD OF THE CHAMBERS AND THEN LENGTHENED THE CHAMBERS TO 2 ¾” AND EXTENDED THE FORCING CONES TO 1 ½” TAPERS SO THAT YOU CAN SHOOT MODERN 2 ¾” FIELD LOADS THROUGH OUR GUNS.  This is a $360 service in our shop.  THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN, WITH A 90-DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY, HAVING BEEN STRIPPED TO THE SMALLEST PART, ULTRASONIC CLEANED, ALL PARTS SCRUBBED CLEAN, INSPECTED FOR FUNCTION AND INTEGRITY, LUBRICATED AND REASSEMBLED, A $275 SERVICE IN OUR SHOP.  Having 4 full-time gunsmiths allow us to properly care for these fine old shotguns, making sure they are tight, mechanically excellent, and ready for decades of trouble-free use.  Why would you buy a 100+ year-old gun without knowing it has been serviced properly and guaranteed to be “as represented.  Don’t risk this headache!  The Fox gun with heavy #1 weight 32” barrels and tight chokes is in high demand for those chasing waterfowl, pheasants, doves, turkey, trap targets, crows, pigeons, etc.  Finding one with lots of case color, deep and clean cut engraving, and fully vetted is rare indeed.  Thanks for looking!
