FRENCH Antique TULLE ARSENAL Model 1822 T GENDARMERIE Conversion Pistol
Flintlock to Percussion & “1827” Dated
Here we present an antique French Tulle Arsenal Model 1822 T Gendarmerie Pistol, made in 1827 and converted circa the early 1860s at the French State Arsenal in Maubeuge. Tulle Arsenal was one of the main French small arms producing centers from the 17th century through to the 20th. It was, though, of lesser importance to the main arsenals at Saint-Étienne, Maubeuge, and Châtellerault. This pistol was made as a military police pistol and was converted from flintlock to percussion when the more reliable percussion firing system came about, which greatly extended the life of these type pistols.
A Gendarmerie is a military force with law enforcement duties among the civilian population in France. The Police Nationale is responsible for Paris and other urban areas whereas the Gendarmerie is responsible for small towns and rural areas with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants.
The overall condition is good. Original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid and still shows acceptance markings.
