The Mauser C96 (Construktion 96) is a semi-automatic pistol that was originally produced by German arms manufacturer Mauser from 1896 to 1937. The distinctive characteristics of the C96 are the integral box magazine in front of the trigger, the long barrel, the wooden shoulder stock, which gives it the stability of a short-barreled rifle and doubles as a holster or carrying case, and a grip shaped like the handle of a broom. The grip earned the gun the nickname "broomhandle" in the English-speaking world, and in China the C96 was nicknamed the "box cannon" because of its rectangular internal magazine and because it could be holstered in its wooden box-like detachable stock. This particular example is a 1930 Commercial model in very good condition overall and excellent condition mechanically. This Broomhandle is all-original and matching except for the floorplate, which is an original factory part but numbered to another gun. This 1930 Commercial Mauser is very handsome overall with a beautiful factory-original high-polish gloss blue finish that is still bright and clean and very much intact all over the gun. The deductions come from some scattered minor handling marks, some small spots on the underside of the barrel where the finish is worn/gone, and a little bit of pin-prick type pitting from some light surface rust removed a long time ago. The pin-prick pitting is hard to see but is located on the right side of the gun just below the chamber opening and a few below that on the right magazine flat. This can be seen best in picture number 2. The spots of finish loss with no pitting on the barrel can be see in picture number 10. The worst of the damage/wear on this gun is located on the floorplate, where there are some scratches and scrapes on the floorplate of the box magazine. These can be seen best in picture number 9. The scattered handling marks are mostly concentrated on the back strap of the grip where the finish has some wear marks from being attached to a stock and above that where someone who did not know what they were doing stratched the frame below the take-down latch. As you can see from the pictures, this Broomhandle is a very good looking gun despite the deductions. The bore is superb with sharp rifling and with no visible pitting or imperfections. The factory markings are all still crisp and clean, and the factory-polished parts left in-the-white such as the bolt and the sight ladder are still bright and clean with no stains or pitting. The internals of this Broomhandle look like-new with ZERO visible wear or damage. They all are in near pristine condition. It is very apparent from the condition of the internals and bore that this gun has been fired very little in it's life and has been well-cared for over the years. The original grips on this Broomhandle are in very good condition as well, free from any cracks, repairs, or major dings/damage. The biggest deduction comes from the bottom of the right grip panel where the lanyard ring was pressed into it making two dents in that location. The grips match each other perfectly in color and patina, and the 12 grooves on either side are deep and well-defined. While the grips are not serial-numbered, which is proper for this model, they are most definitely original to this gun due to how well they fit the gun with a perfect metal to wood fitment. As was the practice, the wood grips are perfectly flush with the metal from the top of the rear backstrap all the way around to the bottom of the stock slot, and from that point on around to the front strap the wood is slightly proud of the metal. The lanyard loop is in great shape and still has the original ring on it, a piece often lost or replaced. This 1930 Commercial is in perfect working order from front to back. The action is smooth and slick, all of the controls work perfectly, and the adjustable rear sight works perfectly. The action locks back when empty as it should, and the safety works properly as well, not allowing the hammer to fall all the way down if the trigger is pulled with it on. We have no doubt that this Broomhandle will function just as well today as it did when it left the factory around 90 years ago! This Broomhandle comes with a nice reproduction stock. The gun fits inside the stock nicely but when you try to attach it as a shoulder stock it is very tight. It needs some fitting to fully attach to the gun, which is far better than being loose and sloppy.
