Description:
This is a superb example of the first generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver.  It was manufactured one hundred and eighteen years ago, in 1905. Chambered in .38 WCF (.38-40), with a 5.5" barrel, and original GP hard rubber grips.  The smokeless powder frame, hammer and loading gate are case colored, retaining beautiful definition. Barrel and backstrap/trigger guard are finished in the matte commercial blue, with over 95% original finish remaining. Frame screws and trigger are high luster niter (fire) blue finish. All screws are in excellent condition and show no signs of buggering.  Frame, triggerguard and grip buttplate have matching serial numbers (267899), and the inside face of the hard rubber grips are lightly hand etched with "7899".  The loading gate has a "5682" assembly number stamped on it and there is a "5" assembler's number stamped on the upper front face of the left side of the trigger guard. The inside faces of the grip panels also have a stylized "JR" and "W" (or "M"?) etched into them.... These latter markings apparently done by a previous owner as they are etched over top of the "7899" believed to have been done at Colt during manufacturing.  The stylized "JR" looks like it could represent the cattle brand of a ranch. The "W" is etched along with a diamond or box shape as well, though it could be "PW" which is also etched on the exterior surface of the left grip panel.  The right exterior grip panel has been etched with the likeness of a cow's head (see pictures), leading me to believe that this gun was owned by a cowboy or ranch hand (PW) working at the JR ranch (or Jones Ranch or James Ranch, etc.)...but this is just my speculation.  The carved "PW" and steer head image are the only modifications noticeable on this otherwise pristine revolver.  The exterior metal surfaces show minimal fine freckling, while the cylinder exhibits virtually no spin ring.  The bore is bright with sharp lands and grooves and the "4 click" action functions 100%.  Judging by the difference in condition of the grips and exterior metal surfaces, the gun must have been refinished at some point over it's life...though the refinishing is of superb quality and virtually undetectable.  Of the five calibers that the 1st generation SAA's were produced in, the .38WCF is the third most rare, with a total of only 50,520 manufactured in this caliber.  This gun is in incredible condition, both cosmetically and mechanically and would make an outstanding addition to any Colt SAA collection.
This revolver is classified as a Curio & Relic by the ATF.
