Description:
One of only three "pairs" of consecutively numbered (David Miller numbered 251 and 252) custom pre-64 Model 70 rifles from David Miller Company., these rifles in 7mm Rem. Mag. and .375 H&H Mag. were made for the wife of furniture magnate Bob Levitz of Levitz Furniture in the 1980s. Both rifles are inscribed "Lee Levitz," Bob's wife. Accordingly, the length of pull on both rifles is 13 1/4" and both have 24 inch barrels. Both are mounted with Kahles scopes with German post reticles (1.5-4.5x on the .375 and fixed 4x on the 7mm). NOTE: SCOPES ARE IN NOTICEABLY WORSE CONDITION THAN THE RIFLES with numerous dings, dents, scratches and blemishes, however, the glass is as clear as Austrian crystal! The rifles are 95% overall with some bluing wear at the muzzle on the 7mm. Checkering is near perfect, however, there are customary dings to the forends as is normal with hunting rifles. Both rifles are built on pre-64 Model 70 actions with the 7mm dating from 1956 and the .375 from 1958 with large letter WINCHESTER roll marks on the left side of the receivers. The barrels are marked David Miller Co. 7mm Rem. Mag. No. 252 Lee Levitz and David Miller Co. .375 H&H No. 251 Lee Levitz. David Miller was known for his detail work on his custom Model 70s and both of these rifles display his flagship special touches:  four-panel checkered bolt knob with elephant ivory insert on bottom; widow's peak ebony forend tip and matching widow's peak black line spacer on a red recoil pad; fine fleur de lis checkering (note: checkering pattern is similar but not identical on the two forends, perhaps to aid in distinguishing them in a rack; pistol grip fleur de lis are identical.); one-piece floorplate machined from bar stock; one-piece scope mount machined from bar stock; blueprinted actions; jeweled bolts; custom steel grip caps; custom bolt release button; tuned trigger; cut-rifled match barrel; highly figured Circassian walnut stock with no cheekpiece; dual recoil lugs covered with ebony plugs. According to Tom Turpin's book, "Custom Rifles: Mastery of Wood and Metal: David Miller Co." only one other consectutively numbered pair was made for noted firearms collector R.L. Wilson which were featured in several of Wilson's books, however, David Miller told the seller he made one other consecutively numbered pair for a total of three, and 251 and 252 are one of the three pair. Again according to Turpin's book, David Miller rifles were literally the most highly sought after custom rifles of the day (1980s) commanding $45,000 for a single gun! Miller was commissioned by Safari Club International to build one of the Big Five rifles, the most sumptuous custom rifles ever made. Miller was hired as a consultant by Winchester (US Repeating Arms) to help redesign the pre-64 action into what would be called the Classic when Winchester finally abandoned the post-64 push-feed and returned to controlled round feeding. This is a unique opportunity to acquire one of only three consecutive pairs ever made by David Miller at a very attractive price.
