Description:
Offered is an early J. M. Marlin “Pacific” model Ballard, S.N. 18111; This fine Pacific rifle was originally chambered in .45-70 Gov’t, but was rebored to .50-70 Gov’t. This Ballard is factory fitted with an extra heavy 32” octagonal barrel measuring 1.155” at the breech and 1.070” at the muzzle; note that the breech of the barrel matches the rebated cut in the receiver. The factory caliber of .45-70 Gov’t is stamped into the top barrel flat. The barrel has a near perfect bore; I rate it at 9.5 out of 10, based on my naked eye (no bore scope). The octagon barrel retains very sharp edges and retains the factory rear sight; the front sight is a folding Beeches sight. The receiver is rebated and has the two line J. M. Marlin address/Ballard patent stamping. The receiver, barrel, lever and buttplate are mostly a mottled patina with no finish. The rifle has the wonderful double set triggers that Ballard rifles are renowned for, and the action is worked via the loop lever, which closes smartly. The buttstock and the forearm wood have been replaced, most likely when the barrel was rebored, and are nearly flawless, with excellent wood to metal fit. The cleaning rod appears to be original. This is a heavy rifle, weighing about 14 pounds!
Altogether, this is a fine, extra heavy barreled “Pacific” model Ballard rifle in a desirable caliber with a special order heavy 32” barrel. With a quality rebluing of the barrel and re-case coloring of the receiver, this rifle would make a most handsome and desirable Pacific.
