Description:
Offered here is an early Civil War Model 1860 Spencer Rifle with its original socket bayonet found in an attic in Virginia in nice untouched condition.  In fact, it looks like someone must have done some painting nearby without moving or covering the gun, as I had to clean some drops of white paint off the barrel and bayonet.  You can still see a couple small specks on the bayonet.  I like the fact this gun hasn’t been recently sanded, wire brushed, and refinished like many you see for sale these days.  Rifle is stamped with serial number 7388, falling into the range issued to the 39th Indiana Mounted Infantry in June 1863.  In fact, on the same day that month that Wilder’s Brigade was using their Spencer rifles in their famous battle at Hoover’s Gap, the 39th Indiana was using their newly acquired Spencer rifles several miles away in the initial assault at Liberty Gap.  With the Spencer rifles, they advanced so quickly they drove off the Confederate pickets, capturing the crossroads and some prisoners at the cost of only one man wounded.  This rifle shows clear maker stampings and serial number.  The action and loading tube work perfectly.  The gun does have a few warts which I point out so there will be no surprises.  There is no visible cartouche, there is some small wood loss at the top of the butt plate, and a larger sliver missing between the bottom of the butt plate and the sling swivel base. The rifle was missing its original front sling swivel.  The original screw was still there and I added a reproduction swivel for now.  But overall the rifle presents well and I much prefer its look to one that has been over sanded and refinished. There is good tight fit between the metal and wood.  The barrel is mostly smooth with a nice plum color. The bore is bright with strong rifling.  The rear sight is present and fully functional.  The bayonet locks easily.  Please take a good look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.  Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states.  Shipping cost $65.00 towards Priority Mail and insurance.  It will cost me more than that to ship it. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping.
