NICE London Made Percussion POCKET PISTOLS

Here we present an antique Richard Hollis Percussion Pistol Pair made circa the 1840s in London, England. Richard Hollis was active in Birmingham, England from the early to mid-1800s and appears to have passed away sometime before 1847 as an advertisement from that year shows the company reformed as Hollis Brothers & Co. Hollis & Sons started out in the early part of the 19th century with the name of “Hollis Brothers”. It continued under that trade name until 1847 when it was re-named “Hollis Brothers & Co. which continued until 1848, when it became “Hollis & Sheath” after Isaac took on Isaac Brentnall Sheath as a partner. This continued until 1861 when the firm changed its name to I. Hollis & Sons on the departure of Sheath.

These little self-defense pistols would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in a busy city like London or Paris during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 16th-19th century. Before being referred to as a deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff. As mentioned, this was of course made primarily for self-defense, and very well would tell stories if it could. Much happened in the United States and abroad during this period. Its short barrel and small bore would have been very easy to conceal and would have been quite the shock for the ne’er do wells roaming the big city streets.

The overall condition is very good. Excellent action. Both bores are in good shape for their ages. Traditional floral designs are engraved on the frame. The grips are in good shape with average handling we and nice checkering. British proofs and “R.H.” are present on the bottom of the barrel. Legible markings. These examples have been nicely refinished at some point in time.
