Description:
NSN, .41 Swiss RF, 30 1/4" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of mild freckling within the grooves. This is an extremely handsome and interesting rifle, identical in most respects to the issue Model 1851/67 Milbank-Amsler Feldstutzer, except for the highly modified, hammerless Peabody style action. The barrel retains 95-97% of the original browned finish, while the frame and elaborate underlever have a mottled gray and plum-brown patina. The only markings on the gun are on the right side of the frame: "VERBESSERTES PEABODY – SISTEM / VON / JOH. WALSER IN HEIDEN" (IMPROVED PEABODY – SYSTEM). Johann Walser operated in Heiden, Switzerland from about 1840. The rifle is equipped with standard Swiss military sights, and has a cocking indicator on the top tang, although the spring is either broken or missing. This does not affect the function of the action, however, and the double-set triggers are also fully functional. The wedge-fastened walnut forend has numerous small handling marks and blemishes throughout the original varnish finish, while the buttstock with hooked buttplate has similar marks, as well as a short with-the-grain crack running back from the tip of the lockplate. This is an excellent example of what could be a prototype, or one-of-a-kind Swiss military rifle. It is a fascinating non-Martini hammerless Peabody action, and would make a stellar addition to any collection. Antique
