Antique JAMES BOWN & SON Marked Half-Stock Percussion American LONG RIFLE
With S.F. GORDON Marked Barrel & DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS
Here we present an antique James Bown & Son Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the late 1850s to the early 1860s in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Bown was an active gunmaker in Pittsburg between 1848 and 1887. His business was eventually sold to Brown & Hirth where they used the name “Enterprise Gun Works”. The barrel is also marked S.F. Gordon, which is likely an ownership marking. This example has the ubiquitous Joseph Golcher lock.
This rifle features a large trigger guard and is designed to be used as a pistol grip. This rifle features double set triggers that provide an extremely light and crisp break. The barrel is 36 inches long and octagonal with a rifled .34 caliber bore.
The overall condition is good. Original patina preserved. Strong action. Must set the triggers for the hammer to cock. This example has maintained a very good bore for its age. Solid stock throughout, and contains an average amount of wear, minor dents, and dings. There is a split at the lock screw head on the left side and the barrel wedge key—both are stable.
