Description:
Spencer Rifle Serial no. 4369. Delivered late winter-early spring 1863 to Col. John T. Wilder for issue to what was to become the FAMOUS WILDER'S LIGHTNING BRIGADE. This rifle is one of maybe a dozen known engraved rifles issued to the 123rd Illinois Mounted Infantry. It is engraved on top of barrel Co.A No.32 123ILL.. WILDERS BRIGADE consisted of five regiments of mounted infantry as follows: 92nd ILL, 98th ILL, 123rd ILL, 17th IND, 72nd IND, and the 18th IND Light Artillery. The only guns that can truly be identifed as going to one of these regiments are the engraved ones of the 123rd ILL (around a dozen known), some rifles of the 72nd IND are known by direct serial no. hit in Springfield Research. These are also quite rare, but pop up once in a while. The 72nd had twelve companies, but only 7 companies have records that have come to light. The only way to identify a rifle of the other regiments is by a soldiers name carved into the rifle somewhere. I've collected Wilders Brigade many, many years and have never had the chance on a 17th IND rifle. I bought this rifle over 23 years ago. When its comes to a WILDERS rifle we collectors saw the rougher, the better. These rifles show varying degree of extreme wood wear as being carried on horseback multiple ways. Usually by the front barrel band and nose cap. And also the rear of the forearm. This rifle is totally correct with original sights. Bore has moderately good rifling with some dark areas as you would expect in one of these rifles that saw heavy combat. Functions well. The two most prized Spencer rifles are one that can be identifed as being issued to WILDERS LIGHTNING BRIGADE and one of the rifles issued to the 5th and 6th Michigan Cavalry under CUSTER at GETTYSBURG. I also have one of those for sale. This is an opportunity that doesn't come along too often in the advanced Civil War collecting field. Please call 973-214-3407 with any questions. Thankyou
