(#175) This pistol was originally produced as a flintlock by Robert Johnson of Middletown, CT in 1842. It is a 54 caliber, smoothbore pistol with an 8-1/2” round barrel and all iron hardware. The lock has been converted to percussion via the side-lug method and reads “US/R.JOHNSON/MIDDn CONN/ 1842”. The breach of the barrel is stamped “U.S./JCB/P”. The wood is excellent for its age and the side panel boosts two outstanding cartouches. The first is JCB (which matches the barrel) and are those of Joseph C. Bragg, a civilian employee of the Ordnance Department. Only M1836 pistols by Waters and Johnson with a date of 1842 bear his stamp. The second cartouche is that of William A. Thornton, Brevet Brigadier General, US Army. William A. Thornton was the longest serving inspector in the history of the Ordnance Department and inspected everything from flintlock muskets to metallic cartridge breechloaders. This pistol is functionally fine and is complete except for missing its swivel ramrod. This can be purchased for $45 from S&S Firearms. This is an opportunity to own a gun inspected by two of the most prolific inspectors in the history of the Ordnance Department. Well worthy of restoration and very reasonably priced.
