Description:
VERY FINE CONDITION MERWIN & HULBERT LARGE FRAME .44-40 CALIBER DOUBLE ACTION 3 1/2" BARREL "POCKET ARMY" REVOLVER WITH SCARCE FOLDING HAMMER, #8XXX, MADE IN LIMITED QUANTITY 1880s. This is a sharp example with all matching serial numbers on the frame (butt), cylinder and barrel. Has the correct Hopkins & Allen with patent dates stampings on the left side of the barrel along with "CALIBRE WINCHESTER 1873" stamp below the cylinder on the left side of the frame to indicate the .44-40 chambering. Also has the 1885 patent stamping on the left side of the folding hammer. Retains about all the bright nickel on the barrel assembly and most of the nickel on the frame sides with gray mixing on the cylinder and grip straps. Has the correct "skull crusher" grip frame with lanyard hole. These incredibly well engineered and manufactured revolvers were made so that the barrel could be rotated and pulled forward for ejecting fired cases. With the push of a side lever, the barrel and cylinder are easily removed for cleaning. Loading was accomplished by sliding down the loading gate on the right side of the frame. Excellent hard rubber birds head grips, unique folding hammer (an option on this model), tight action that functions perfectly in single or double action, excellent bore. One of the more distinctive and interesting of the Frontier Old West big bore revolvers of the period. Really nice example.
