Description:
General Specs: Ithaca Grade 2E, Year 1928, 20 Gauge, 6lb 9oz, Chokes IC/M, LOP 13 3/4", DAH 2 11/16", DAC 1 1/2"
Serial Number: 452272

The Ithaca Gun Co. can be considered the most successful of all the vintage American double gun companies.  They had 7 different models of double guns with over 420,000 guns produced.  That does not count the Western Arms, Lefever Gun Co., or Single Barrel Traps.  All told Ithaca was the most prolific of all makers at well over 1/2 million break action guns produced.  Parker made approximately 250,000 guns.    L.C. Smith was the only company to come close at 439,000 guns.  At that time the Ithaca was priced nearly the same, grade for grade, as the other makers but outsold the other makers by at least 50%.  They offered better figured wood and more decorative checkering patterns than their competitors, gorgeous engraving, and a gun that functioned the way they were expected to.  The buying public obviously considered the Ithaca the better gun.  Ithaca's final model was considered their best, called the New Ithaca Double, or NID, and was second in strength only to the Winchester Model 21.  The NID has the strongest collector interest, and it is a delightful gun.  This gun, sn452272 made in 1928, is in incredible condition.  ALL FINISHES ARE FACTORY ORIGINAL, INCLUDING THE WOOD.  The 28” barrels retain 98% blue, excellent bores, tight ribs, 2 ¾” chambers, and fit tight to the hinge pin and breech face.  The action retains 90% case color, excellent screws and mechanics, very nice game scene engraving, trigger guard 90% blue, and top lever is to the right of center. The wood is solid, no cracks, strong checkering, and good stock dimensions and nicely figured.  To find a Grade 2E 20ga. with a factory single trigger and ejectors, a ton of factory condition, and perfect mechanics is a treasure.  The only thing altered on the gun are the chokes which are now IC/M rather than F/F as shipped.  See the specs below.  Ithaca guns are the very best investment in American vintage doubles, as they have not yet had their price spike the way Parker, and Fox did, and now L.C. Smith is having.  Gorgeous to look at, dynamite in hand, and mechanically excellent, there is not a better gun out there from the big 5 American makers.  Thanks for looking!
