Description:
The Model 686 is the de-facto standard of the Smith & Wesson medium-frame revolver line. It has been used for every purpose from self-defense to target shooting and by a great many people. Like its blued finish cousin, the Model 586, the 686 was designed to correct then existent strength issues with its predecessor, the stainless K-frame Model 66 by using the new, slightly larger L-frame. That Smith & Wesson succeeded with the 686 can be attested to by the fact that the model has been in continuous production since 1980. The example here is a new in box Model 686-6 Plus. The Plus denotes that this 686 has a 7-shot cylinder rather than the usual 6-shot. The 686 Plus shown here is SKU 164300. It features a 3-inch, full-lug barrel, a red ramp front sight and Micrometer-click rear sight, a 0.312-inch smooth combat trigger and a 0.375-inch semi-target hammer. It comes from the factory sporting the standard rubber grips with finger grooves. These are designed to ensure a positive grip during firing. They are produced by Hogue specifically for Smith & Wesson, and as such, use the S&W logo rather than Hogue’s. As with any .357 Magnum, the 686 Plus will also shoot the .38 Special. This is useful for saving money when practice shooting at the range. Technically speaking, the revolver will also chamber and fire modern production .38 Long Colt as it is the predecessor to both the .38 Special and .357 Magnum. This cartridge is not all that common though. This 686 naturally comes with its factory box. The 3-inch barrel makes this revolver well-suited for home defense. With a proper holster it would also do well as a conceal carry gun.
