Description:
This is a very good example of an early 3rd Model Winchester 1866 Musket. Standard 27" round barrel, long forewood, ladder rear sight, military/carbine style buttstock, and sling swivels. The 24" tubular magazine held seventeen rounds of .44 rimfire ammunition. The serial number is 32489. It was made in 1870 and while unmarked, the serial number is right in the middle of a group of muskets that shipped to the Louisiana State Militia in the 31,000 to 34,000 range. There is an old issue of "The Gun Report" about the LSM muskets and how just over 300 were lost in New Orleans in 1874 during the battle of Liberty Place (Copied from AAInc). Barrel and magazine tube is a nice pleasing brown / blue patina. Good barrel marking and original sights. Very nice bore that I will rate a 7 on a scale from 1 to 10. Brass receiver has a pleasing mellow tone to it. Forend and buttstock are in good condition showing normal handling marks that you would expect to see from a firearm from this era. All serial numbers match: tang, buttstock upper inlet, and buttplate. Action functions nicely. There is still some fire blue on loading gate. Please feel free to ask questions. This an antique and can be shipped directly to your doorsteps. More pictures are available upon request.
