Introduced in 1796 and in widespread production by 1802, the New Land Cavalry Pistol provided one model of pistol for all of Britain's cavalry units such as the Royal Horse Artillery. Initially it started out with a rounded brass butt, as is the example, but this soon gave way to a flat butt with a lanyard ring. The ring on the later pistols allowed the pistol to be attached to the cavalryman's equipment and not be lost in the heat of battle. The famous East India Company made many of these for British Cavalry serving in India, who in turn brought them into service elsewhere in the world. The 1812 dated lock is marked with the rampant lion symbol of the East India Company at the center. It is unit marked with “25/LD/E/23” on both the bottom of the trigger guard and the ramrod, indicating the pistol was issued to “E” Company of the 25th Light Dragoons (1804-1819), who spent most of their existence deployed in India. The second page of the article gives quite a nice succinct history of the unit. Overall condition is fair to good. Original patina. The action moves under spring tension and will hold half-cock but not the full-cock notch. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock shows lots of wear and remains solid. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 9 inches. Caliber: .65 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
