Beretta® designed their 690 Field III Over/Under Shotgun with a low-profile receiver to provide the fast swing and enhanced point-ability needed for upland hunting. At the heart of the 690's quick and instinctive shooting are opposing trunnions mounted on the receiver walls where the barrels pivot, thus eliminating the need for bulky underhooks to form a hinge. As a result of this more compact arrangement, the low-profile line of sight enables the shooter to point the gun instinctively; the recoil is directed rearward to the shooter's shoulder where it is less disruptive to firing a second shot, instead of snapping the stock up at the shooter's cheek. The locking lugs are curved on the 690 III, with a larger contact area for extra strength, compared to the 686, and the hinge pin is larger for longer wear. The extractors are retained in dovetails within the monoblock receiver, making them incredibly strong. The ejectors on the 690 can also be switched off by turning their retainer to block their lift, if wanted. The safety's thumb-piece is somewhat larger on the 690 III compared to Beretta's sporting clays shotguns, and it has larger serrations to provide a solid surface to push under field conditions. The forearm hardware on the 690 is aluminum, with an improved locking system. The Beretta 690 Field III Over/Under Shotgun features roll marked game scenes engraved on the receiver, and a stunning, oil-finished, high-grade walnut stock. The monoblock barrels are made from Beretta's Steelium material, a nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel. Chrome-plated bores guard against corrosion and make cleaning easier. Elongated forcing cones and Optima-Bore HP interchangeable, screw-in chokes enhance uniform patterns and allow a shooter to use both lead and steel shot. The 6mm ventilated rib attaches to the barrel with a base that has full contact with the top barrel, rather than feet only. The Beretta 690 Field III is a rugged and reliable Over/Under Shotgun with elegant lines and exceptional finish. The 690 balances perfectly, shoulders effortlessly, and swings smoothly.
