Here we present an antique John H. Krider Full Stock Percussion Militia Rifle made circa 1861 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Krider was a gunsmith who possessed an unusual skill who was considered by many to be Philadelphia’s most outstanding maker of the percussion era. Krider is reported to have made only a few hundred of these long arms similar to the Model 1841 “Mississippi” rifles. Records from the Krider business account indicate that less than 150 “rifles” and less than 100 “muskets” being sold between 1861 and 1862. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Krider apparently tried to cash in on the need for arms in the north and started to produce a variety of percussion .58 caliber muzzle loading, rifled long arms for sale to the Union. Krider rifles are described on pages 393-395 of American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume III by George Moller. Krider military pattern arms are very scarce due to limited production.
The first city directory in Philadelphia that Krider’s name appears is in 1837 with his shop located at Second and Walnut Streets in the same building that later housed the original and famous Book Binders Restaurant. Krider was also a successful businessman who had built a large sporting goods business during the 1830s, 40s & 50s in Philadelphia, called the Sportsman’s Depot. The name of the business and the breadth of items offered in his store bring to mind the sprawling 19th century equivalent of Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s! Krider served all of the sporting public’s needs by providing everything from fishing tackle and taxidermy supplies to dog muzzles and firearms.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Bright, nicely rifled bore. The stock is solid with an average amount of wear. “KRIDER” marked lock. The rear sight moves around in the dovetail at present. The leather sling is in good shape. “US” marked bayonet.
