Description:
Smith & Wesson .38/44 is a heavy N-frame revolver chambered for the .38 Special cartridge but designed to handle higher pressure loading for that cartridge. It provided police a revolver cartridge that could penetrate automobiles and was a reasonable solution until .357 Magnum revolvers became widely available. The higher-pressure ammunition would be head stamped to identify it from standard pressure .38 Special. This factory nickel revolver was property of the Austin Police Department and was manufactured in 1952. It is marked "Austin Police Department 42" on the backstrap. The butt also has a factory re-work star with two return dates on the grip frame of "952" (Sept 1952) and "973" (Sept 1973). Smith & Wesson delivered 250 38/44s to the Austin Police Department from June of 1952 with the final delivery on December 1964 – 8 orders total. This revolver was shipped in the 1st order, shipping June 3, 1952. The serial number on the barrel, yoke, cylinder, star extractor and frame are matching. The grips are not period correct and are not serial numbered to the revolver. The front sight has been filed down, likely to accommodate the shooting accuracy of a previous owner. The nickel finish is in excellent condition, having been re-nickeled during one or both of the factory re-works, as most of the Austin Police Department 38/44s were. .38 Special
