Description:
Westley Richards MARTINI-HENRY.22 Cal. LR FALLING BLOCK Sporting Rifle C&R

INSCRIBED Small Caliber Single Shot TARGET Rifle

Here we present a C&R Westley Richards Martini-Henry Single Shot Falling Block Target Rifle made circa the turn of the century in Birmingham, England. The Martini–Henry is a breech-loading single-shot lever action rifle whose first iteration of the rifle came about in 1871 and was adopted by the British Army to replace the Enfield Snider Breech Loading Rifles that were being phased out. The action is based on the patent by American and Boston native Henry O. Peabody, which was improved by Swiss inventor Friedrich von Martini. The new polygonal barrel rifling was the design of Scotsman Alexander Henry. This is where the rifle derives its name. Martini–Henry variants were used throughout the British Empire for 47 years. Like other British weapons, the Peabody-Martini-Henry saw action all over the world, and most famously in the Zulu Wars in Africa.

The receiver on this rifle is marked “MADE SPECIALLY FOR/ZAR” and “CONVERTED BY C. G. BONEHILL OF BIRMINGHAM/FOR THE SOCIETY OF MINIATURE RIFLE CLUBS” on the right and left, respectively.

The overall condition is good. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent with a crisp single action trigger. The bore is shiny bright with great rifling. The stock shows lots of wear and use and remains solid. The rear sight is absent but would have been a peep sight on the back of the receiver probably by AGA as the front sight is trademarked.
