Description:
Antique ASA WATERS U.S. Model 1836 .54 Caliber Smoothbore FLINTLOCK Pistol

Punched with the Name C.H. THROOP

Here we present an antique A.H. Waters U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol, manufactured in 1844, marked “C.H. THROOP”. We believe there is a good possibility that this was Caleb Hardin Throop (1822-1889), a Sargent in Company I of the 6th Illinois Cavalry during the American Civil War. The left stock flat, in addition to bearing the usual inspector cartouches, has been stamped throughout with various names, some more legible than others (ie. last names of Wormwood, Longfellow, and Fish are observable). Other markings include hand-carved initials such as “W.L.M.”, “J.N.” and “J.T.D”. Our theory is that this pistol served as memento or yearbook of sorts with many of a soldier’s friends’ names punched in with individual, small, letter stamps.

These pistols were made around the time of the Mexican-American War and were succeeded by the Model 1842 in a dedicated percussion firing system. These Model 1836 pistols would continue to see service through the American Civil War.

The overall condition is very good. The hammer is an old replacement and the tumbler’s full-cock notch is too deep and traps the sear, thus pulling the trigger will not fire the piece. The cock must be pulled back and the trigger pressed to lower the cock to the resting position. The bore is smooth and dark. The walnut stock shows use and remains solid.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
