Description:
General Specs: Spencer, Year C1863, .56/56, 9lb 3oz, LOP 13 1/8"
Serial Number: 16814
A Desirable Civil War Spencer Carbine. This rifle is caliber .52 rimfire utilizing the Spencer No. 56 straight copper case which measured .56 at the top and bottom of the casing, designated .56/56 cal. when referring to the Spencer cartridge. On the front of the action the gun is roll stamped SPENCER REPEATING -  RIFLE CO.  BOSTON MASS .  PAT'D. MARCH 6 1860. in three lines.  Behind the breech is serial number 16814. The first Carbines were delivered to the War Department October 3, 1863 with deliveries continuing up to August 31, 1865, with a total of 61,685 issued, a further 15,500 being delivered after General Lee’s surrender. Research indicates that this Carbine was Issued to C company, 1st Regiment, 20th New York Cavalry in 1863. The buttstock is marked at the toe with what appears to be an abbreviated unit code. The furniture has the dings and scratches associated with legitimate military firearms. The metal work shows mostly brown patina. Mechanically the rifle functions perfectly with the bore having strong rifling. The screws are in very good to excellent condition. The tubular magazine is loaded into the buttstock through a swinging trapdoor, when the lever is pulled down an empty case is ejected and a new case lined up to the breech, on closing the action the cartridge is pushed forward into the breech. The hammer must be manually cocked for each shot. When introduced the seven shot Sharps was a small arms revolution. Troops would carry extra pre-loaded tubes designed to quickly charge the magazine for a staggering amount of firepower when judged by Civil War standards. The Spencer is arguably the best repeating longarm of the Civil War with the advantage of being more rugged and reliable than its contemporary the Henry repeating rifle. Following the War the Spencer went on to be used on the Western Frontier. An historical firearm, ideal for any Civil War Collection and of special interest to the collectors of New York. Thanks for looking!
