Description:
Serial #0.17, .64 Caliber, 35 1/2" swamped octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome and imposing rifle, built prior to the standardization of the Model 1851 Fedstutzer following the establishment of the Swiss Confederation. The barrel retains 80-85% of the original blue finish with silvering at the muzzle and along the edges of the barrel facets, and a dark plum-brown patina on the balance. The bayonet tunnel on the right side of the muzzle has a matching patina and the leaf spring is still present and functional (these rifles took an angular blade bayonet with tapered hilt and the spring would lock into a slot milled into the bayonet itself). The rifle has the original short front sight blade mated to the original adjustable rear sight with unusual pendulum-type level, and an adjustable double-set trigger is also installed. The engraved lockplate has a pale ruddy-brown patina, while the hammer has a few areas of pinprick pitting under a later heat-colored finish. The wedge-fastened stock is in very good shape with numerous handling marks and surface blemishes scattered about. The brass wedge escutcheons, shaped trigger guard, and hooked, target type buttplate are in fine shape with an overall yellow-ochre patina throughout. The original brass-tipped ramrod is included. This is a fine example of an early Swiss military sharpshooter’s rifle, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique
